Equator Asia was finally launched last January in Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum. As a result of a collaboration between the BIMP-EAGA Tourism Council and the GTZ, the new brand hopes to leverage on the sub-regions status as one of the most biologically
productive and diverse regions in the world. During the launch, Dr Peter Richter, principal advisor and project manager of GTZ BIMP-EAGA project said that the brand emphasized ecotourism and will be a boon to
those advocating world conservation. Equator Asia – the Heart of Biodiversity was meant to reflect the location of the region along the equator and the richness of its flora and fauna. More than half of the worlds richest flora and fauna can be found there. Located at the core of the Coral Triangle, Equator Asia is home to the worlds richest marine biodiversity in the world, and also has one of the last three remaining low-land forests in the world.
Sail BIMP-EAGA: Explor-ing Equator Asia is the banner for the yacht rally
which started recently. Aiming to promote community-based tourism in the sub-region, the yacht rally is joined by cruising yacht owners and crew and
bring them closer to local communities and tourism players to make them see and experience the tourism attractions, indigenous cultures, or embark on adventurous trip in the islands.
Safety of carrageenan for infant formula and the environment and social impacts of oil palm plantations were among the many quality-related issues discussed during the 2ndQuality Infrastructure Workshop for Seaweed/ Carrageenan Value Chains on March 1-2, 2010 in Makati City. Attended by representatives from the SMED Cluster and NRD Cluster along with private companies from seaweed/ carrageenan and oil palm industries.
The participants discussed current situation in the four countries and developed action plans to address these issues. The workshop report,
presentations and studies are available upon request.
The countries of Malaysia and Indonesia together contribute to around 85% of the global palm oil supply, with more than 30% of the global production capacity located in the areas covered by BIMP-EAGA.
The opportunities for further trade and investment were explored during
the BIMP-EAGA Oil Palm Business Matching Session on June 2, 2010, at the
Sheraton Mustika Hotel in Jogjakarta, Indonesia in conjunction with the International Oil Palm Conference (IOPC). It was participated in by 35 participants from 13 companies and organizations from various line of business, such as palm oil plantations, bio-chemicals, certification services, investors, palm oil research and development, government agencies, and government-owned institutions from Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Japan.
The event was officially opened by Mr. Derom Bangun, the Vice Chairman of
Indonesian Palm Oil Board (IPOB) and Ir. Sugiyono, Head of Business Division of Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI) who also represented the Organizing Committee of IOPC. GTZ‟s Ms. Mary Jean Roxas provided an overview of BIMP-EAGA and the highlights of the
BIMP EAGA Palm Oil Stakeholder Analysis which is a part of the agencys support to the sub-region through the VC approach. The event was also held in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture and the BIMP-EAGA Business Council. The business matching for oil palm was a priority undertaking under the BIMP-EAGA Action Plan.
The GTZ through Accenture offered three ways to improve her competitiveness in Halal poultry during the validation workshop last March 3, 2010:
1) Reduce input cost for feed production by increasing efficiency and scale of local corn production, source soy beans jointly to increase bargaining power and share cost, collaborate in research to explore substitute inputs for feed production
2) Build-up processing industry
for export
3) Compete in the premium organic Halal market
The NRD Cluster and SMED Cluster meetings in April agreed to form a Halal Poultry Core Group to lay-out the future steps towards the goal to improve the sub-regions competitiveness in Halal poultry and to establish task teams that will implement the recommendations provided.
Through the Public-Private-Partnership of GTZ and the International Halal Integrity Alliance Inc, a series of training sessions will be held for Halal Poultry Stakeholders in BIMP-EAGA. This activity is aimed to: promote best practices for assuring Halal integrity across the entire supply chain of the Halal poultry industry in BIMP-EAGA, help in advancing the integration of the Halal poultry sector in the sub-region and contribute in developing BIMP-EAGA as reliable supply base for authentic Halal poultry products. The training will be conducted on the following dates and places:
July 12-13 Brunei Darussalam
July 15-16 Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia
July 19-20 Zamboanga, Philippines
July 29-30 Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
The training is ideal for participants who are poultry raisers, consolidators, companies, related associations and institutions with extension services and with capacity and desire to transfer the know-how with a larger number of poultry raisers.
The BIMP-EAGA High Value Aquaculture VC Analysis focusing on Grouper was validated in a side workshop during the High Value Aquaculture Business Conference in General Santos City last April 5-7, 2010. The study provides rich information on production and market trends, distribution and marketing, support services, certification and quality standards, and offers possible strategies for grouper aquaculture in the BIMP-EAGA region, as well as business models for high value aquaculture. The study recommends a combination of joint ventures among private companies and public-private partnerships. |
